Angirus: Eco-friendly Bricks from 100% Recycled Waste
Angirus is a circular economy startup reimagining construction by transforming non-recyclable waste into high-performance, sustainable bricks and paver blocks. Its mission is to provide the real estate and infrastructure sectors with affordable, eco-friendly alternatives that address both environmental and social challenges.
The Problem
A Stagnant, Polluting Brick Industry
- The traditional brick industry in India is the second largest in the world but remains largely unchanged, heavily reliant on energy-intensive kilns and exploitative manual labor.
- Brick kilns contribute significantly to carbon emissions, air pollution, and poor working conditions for millions of laborers.
- Construction and demolition (C&D) waste, including plastics and marble slurry, is a mounting environmental issue, with limited avenues for upcycling.

The Solution: Angirus’ Patented “Wricks”
Circular, Automated, and High-Performance
- Technology: Angirus uses a patented process and proprietary machinery to upcycle non-recyclable waste (plastics, marble slurry, C&D debris) into “Wricks”-lightweight, damp-proof bricks and blocks.
- Process: The three-step manufacturing involves mixing, melting, and molding waste materials, with much of the process automated to reduce labor intensity and improve safety.
- Performance: Wricks outperform traditional Class A clay bricks by 40% in compressive strength and absorb 90% less water.
- Environmental Impact:
- 79% less CO₂ emissions
- 96% less water used
- 75% less energy consumed during manufacturing compared to conventional bricks
- Cost & Scalability: Wricks are competitively priced (₹15–20 per block), with production costs expected to fall further as scale increases.
- Human Impact: Mechanized production reduces hazardous labor, providing safer, fairer working conditions and helping to eliminate exploitative practices in the brick sector.

Impact
- Environmental: Reduces landfill and plastic pollution by upcycling waste; drastically cuts carbon, water, and energy footprint of construction.
- Economic: Reduces brickwork costs by up to 20% for green building projects.
- Social: Promotes safer, dignified employment and supports government waste management and pollution goals.
- Recognition: Received grants and awards from IIT Madras, Pernod Ricard India Foundation, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and equity investment from IIM Ahmedabad Ventures.
